Stranger Days
Stranger Times
Stranger Days/Stranger Times
It seems like everything is off these days, like up is down and down is up, like everything is reversing, surging backwards or idling in a sea of insecurity. Sometimes you wonder if you can take it anymore. The days, the times seem stranger and stranger. Maybe it’s just me but I suspect a whole lot of you might feel or, at least, think similarly.
Those feelings must have been swirling in the back of my mind when “Stranger Days,” and it’s extended companion, “Stranger Times,” met my keyboard. The upbeat tune was a bit unexpected even to me. I suppose it reflects the ironies and contradictions woven into today’s current climate. The mix of minor harmonies and dissonant chords serve as the back drop to the melody.
Together, these parts depict the outcrop of chaotic occurrences behind the pall of every day normalcy . “Stranger Times” is more of an outgrowth of “Stranger Days” with expanded measures and variations .
The upbeat tone just reflects the fact that I’m ever the optimist, despite all the absurdity. I can feel in the air an uncertain yet abiding hope for better days and happier times to come.
The Spark Behind The Idea
When a tune pops into my head . . . .
I never know how they’ll turn out. Sometimes they’re pretty good. Other times, not so much. It’s hit or miss. Bad notes, unconnected improvisational tangents, weird measures and fingering stumbles, you’ll never know what you’re going to get.
All my off-the-top-of-my-head compositions are raw, underdeveloped works. In listening back, I can hear the potential laid bare and the missed opportunities lost in the spontaneity of the moment. But by recording them, I have the chance to discover and explore areas of possibility and develop full compositions.

It’s roughly a one minute long (sometimes a tad longer), online series, showcasing original concepts made up right there on the spot.
This one-ish minute idea addresses, with respect, the fleetness of our precious time while mindfully accommodating our abbreviated attention span.

True to its title, this series adheres to the same basic concept as “Just One Quick Minute” except for one feature: the tunes run a bit too long to fit the one-ish minute parameters. But longer pieces allow for more surprises along the piano keyboard trails.
